Piriformis Syndrome, or Pseudo-Sciatica
Have you experienced pain, tingling, burning or numbness shooting from your lower back through your buttocks to your thigh? This common sensation is generally known as “sciatica”, and it is generally caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve that runs from your lower spine to your leg. The most serious cause is a bulging intervertebral disc (L4-L5 or L5-S1) that presses on the nerve root, but a common, simpler cause is muscle spasms of a pelvic muscle, the piriformis, that presses the sciatic nerve against the pelvic bone. This is typically referred to as “Pseudo-Sciatica” or Piriformis Syndrome. Our massage therapists are specially trained to relieve the spasms of the muscle, give you relief and offer guidance to keep you pain free!
